Where is Your Focus?

24 Aug

How many times have you been in the middle of a workout, feeling like it’s never gonna end, and noticed the person next to you hauling ass like it’s no big deal? At that point usually one of two things can happen: A) You get really competitive with either yourself or that person and it pushes you to work harder, or B) you get angry and defeated. After the workout you might wonder why it comes so easy for them, why no matter how hard you train, you just can’t get your endurance/muscle up/pull ups/lifts/ insertsomeothergoathere right.

Well guess what? Some people are just natural athletes. Some people things come really easy for. Some people have to train a lot harder and more consistently to make things happen. The good thing is that you can really do anything if you have the desire and commitment to perfect it.

Focusing in on other people’s strengths instead of your own can be really destructive. Why? Cause the obvious reason: It takes the focus off of you. Everyone can gain confidence from this, everyone can learn something, and everything has something that they aren’t good at! Instead of letting it get you down, light a fire under your ass. Start working that skill, whatever it is, and MAKE it something you’re good at too.

One thing we like to do at Soul is make up GOAT wod’s – where you pick three movements or skills that you are the worst at and create an AMRAP. Try doing that at least once a week and see how it goes. After a month I bet that you would have improved… so instead of focusing in on that other person, focus in on your weakness and make it your strength!

Finding Your Base Strength

I learned how to do pull ups after 4 months of CrossFit. When I first came in I couldn’t even do a quarter of ONE…. really. I had no strength. Skinny, yes. Strong and healthy? Not at all. CrossFit taught me about fitness and what healthy really is. What it means to find your weaknesses and practice them every day so they become your strengths. So I practiced every day… literally. I tell people this all the time. If you really want something it’s gonna take work. Not some magical wish for it to happen and BAM! there it is, not some hope that your coach will one day give you the right cue and you’ll get it, just practice. Like anything else worth perfecting or learning.

So after 4 months of practicing the kip and kipping with bands I finally got it. First I used the green thick band. I got to about 10-15 unbroken and then I moved to the thinner blue band. Every day I would come in and do 3-4 sets of max reps. The next day, I would try to beat that number, even if it was by only one rep. Eventually I came in one day and a friend of mine had gotten her first unassisted pull ups. I was at about 15 unbroken with the blue thin band and said “shit, if she can do it”….. so I did 5 unbroken unassisted pull ups that night. It felt awesome. I felt strong and accomplished. Today, I can teach a real good kipping pull up and how to break it down perfectly. I can also do 30 unbroken kipping pull ups (maybe more) and a handful of bar muscle ups…. but that doesn’t mean shit.

Why? Well a few months back I took the Gymnastics Certification with Jeff Tucker…. hell of a guy with an awesome bummer face by the way. He taught me a lot about strength and why having a good kipping pull up isn’t really that great if I can barely do a handful of strict pull ups. What the shit?! How many strict pull ups CAN I do? I had never even really cared. CrossFit gets you so into wanting to do things quickly and efficiently. Doing the most amount of work in the shortest amount of time. But how strong am I, really? That weekend I wanted Tucker to help me get my muscle up. He basically told me no… not until you have the strength to do it. In a way, he’s still helping me to get my muscle up… I WILL get a strict one before I get one kipping, I’m convinced.

Anyway, so I went back to basics. I was really stumped as to why I could do so many kipping pull ups and not even one muscle up. I started to train everything strict. Strict handstand push ups (which I could also do a bunch kipping but barely any strict), strict pull ups, strict toes to bar, string ring dips, strict muscle up progressions. What’s gonna happen when HQ says “guess what guys? This WOD calls for strict”! This sport is also all about finding your weaknesses. As weird and as shitty as it is, my weakness is my base strength. I already know I can rely on momentum for all of these movements… and if I can also rep them out strict number one it’s gonna help me get through the WOD easier, and it’s sure as hell gonna help me whoop your ass when I’m next to you.

So take a step back and refocus. Find your base first, worry about momentum later. It will take MUCH longer, I promise, but it’s GOING to make you a better athlete than the next person… unless they train the same way, then it’s all about heart.

Now go get strong!

Just some Ramblings…

I’ve gotten so busy in the gym with programs and coaching and events and all that I’m finding it SO hard to be inspired for the blog… although I know I’ve got readers out there, sometimes I wonder how many people still keep up with the site because I rarely see comments on here. One thing I would love is for there to be an active little online community here!

I want to start a ladies night at the gym. Do any of you guys have something like this?? I’m thinking wod, chill time, food and drinks. Chicks only.

I also need to step back and refocus my time. I’ve read a lot about how stress can really affect not only your emotional well being (duh) but also your performance and weight. Here are some ideas I have that might help you guys who may be going through the same busybusynotimeforanything stuff as me:

1. Make a schedule. Put some mandatory “me” time into every single day.

2. Make a list of things you love to do and are grateful for. Include training, eating, relationships, etc. Compare that list with things you do everyday. Realize that you are doing what you love, even if it’s keeping you super busy.

3. Pamper yourself at least 2x’s per month. Massage, beach day, hair cut, shopping, whatever….

4. That’s all I can think of…

I made a new recipe today after visiting the Vegan Market this weekend – Coconut Milk Milkshakes! Just blend coconut milk, coconut water, coconut flakes, almond butter, vanilla, honey and some ice together. I eat a lot of fat so this was a perfect afternoon snack, try it out!

Last, here’s an article that helped me through this rough week. It’s nice to remember that rough days/weeks are there to make the good ones that much better… Read: “The Brain Needs Downs to Have Ups”

Exercise and Stress Relief

When I first started this blog I had the intention of writing about all the ways CrossFit has changed me and the way I feel. I’ve pretty much stayed consistent with that, although I shifted focus to a lot about body image and nutrition. One of the FIRST things I remember though, is how my energy and stress levels changed when I started CrossFit. I had never experienced that with any type of fitness routine in the past. So today I wanna write about that, because a lot of us don’t really realize how much a consistent routine can help with the stresses of everyday life. And damn, if I don’t get a good workout in multiple times a week I am one cranky bitch!

So lots of people know that exercise is good for you, but a lot of people are too busy and stressed to fit it into their routine. Well… what if I pointed out that all that stress (causing increased cortisol) in your body is actually slowing down your efforts to lose weight? “But I’m on a diet!” Great, your body still senses the stress and therefore prepares for the worst, storing fat “just in case”. SO what’s the best thing for that??? Endorphins! Endorphins are released in your brain causing you to feel good and relaxed after a workout. The more consistent you are with your workouts, the more endorphins you produce, the less fat on your body. Win, Win!

Exercise (especially more challenging workouts) cause you to forget about the daily crap that we deal with. Kind of like meditation, it clears your mind in that moment. The more you have a chance to clear you mind, the better you will feel overall. Think of it as active meditation focusing on that single task, and the resulting energy and optimism you feel can help you remain calm and clear in everything that you do.

All of this improves your mood overall. Improved self-confidence, decreased depression and anxiety, improved sleep, and more control over your body and emotions!

So how do you get motivated? Start slowly. Set a goal for the week, to go three times to the gym. When you accomplish that do it again for the next week, when you’re ready, increase it to four days. Eventually these small short term goals will seem easy and you can move on to bigger and longer term goals. Also, make sure you pick something that you love doing to stay active. Don’t do something because you HAVE to… own it. Come to the gym because you WANT to do something for yourself and you WANT to feel better. You deserve to focus on yourself a bit. The more you turn fitness into something you do to take care of your body the faster you will be on your way to feeling good and looking awesome  :)

See you ladies around!

Exercising Discipline

You can wod anywhere, even on a cruise!!

I was reading an article today about what it means to be disciplined in life and it got me really thinking about my own view on the subject. You have no idea how many times I have heard people say that training the way we do or eating the way we do takes “too much discipline”. Sure, maybe it does… but so what? I feel great. I can do more in the gym than most women or men can. Having “discipline” isn’t really that bad….

BUT how many of us can stick to these things when we are placed outside of our comfort zone? Meaning when you go on a trip, when you don’t (or can’t) work out for a few days, when temptation is placed right in front of you…..

I’m not sure exactly when it started. I would like to say the holidays but I feel like I was back on track for a little bit before the Valentines Day cruise came. So… my husband and I went to the Bahamas for 4 days. Surprisingly there were paleo-ish options available both on the cruise ship and on the island. Did I care? Not really. I took the vacation as a time to eat whatever I wanted and wod as little as possible cause I wanted to “relax”.  Bad idea. I haven’t really been the same since. Where the hell was my discipline?! I completely lost it and have continued to lose it for the past 2 months. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve still been training hard. I still eat clean for most meals but I cheat A LOT.  Luckily this week I decided to cut the crap and start eating clean 90/10 again. Needless to say it’s been a challenge not to get one of those peanut butter mini cupcakes when I walk into Starbucks. ughhhh

Discipline doesn’t mean just having healthy habits. It means being able to maintain that structure in your life when you are placed outside of your comfort zone. “Indeed, discipline is related to the flexibility it takes to abandon a immediately-comforting behavior for a more frightening one.” That makes so much sense to me. I can’t imagine what my life would be like right now had I not continued doing CrossFit cause I was scared of lifting weight. I definitely wouldn’t have this website or own a business, that’s for sure!

So… does the fact that I actually LOVE working out and eating clean make it any less of a challenge? Hell no! Temptation is always out there no matter how much I avoid it. The problem is when I get off track like I did, I don’t feel good about it. Not because I think I’m gonna gain weight or anything like that, but because I know I am better than that. I know that I train this way and eat this way because it makes me feel good first, and second because it helps to make me a better athlete. Being better at CrossFit is important to me and I’m assuming it’s important to you guys too.

Don’t you want to kick ass? Don’t you want to become faster and stronger? Don’t you want to look and feel awesome??? Practice your discipline then. Get outside your normal routine whether it be your training schedule, where you go to eat, who you go out with. Realize your goals and take pride in the fact that yeah, it takes hard work… but so does everything else that is really worth it.

This is a GREAT post from our friends over at CrossFit South Bay in California. I realized it’s been a while since I wrote about women in the CrossFit community and I need to start researching about this year’s upcoming Games competitors. We have some amazingly strong and awesomely athletic women to look up to in this community, and they deserve a shout out. More on that in the weeks to come…

Knowledge is Power

best cf women pic ever - from Orange Coast CrossFit

Hello Hello! I know it’s been a while… I try my best to keep up once a week but with all I have going on, it gets tough sometimes. I promise that I will update more after mid-December when I finish my internship and have more time! I was in Ramona, California this weekend for the CrossFit Kids cert and it was awesome! While on the plane, I had some time to sit down and start reading The Paleo Solution. Great so far, and there are some awesome inspiring stories throughout. One of them got me thinking about my journey transitioning from typical eating/working out/living to what I do now. All of this was so new to me, so different and so not what I wanted to do at first. This woman went through the same… unhappy with herself, 2 kids, feeling blah about life and wanted something new…

Most people don’t want to work hard. If you are reading this blog and you eat clean (and the real definition of clean, not the general public’s definition) and do CrossFit, you are different than most people. You have to get used to that. Basically anything you talk about that involves Paleo or lifting heavy weight or liking the muscles you have and calluses on your hands is gonna get you some weird looks. Most people I talk to (outside of my gym) think I’m crazy. Luckily I found an awesome group of people who love the same things I do; workouts that challenge my limits, having a hard muscly body, and feeling awesome and energetic most days of the week. I don’t care about partying, I don’t care about eating cupcakes and cream puffs, and I really don’t care about doing a workout that makes it easy for me to get “fit” in 5 min (which doesn’t exist by the way)… unless you’re doing something like Fran.

If you are new to all of this, you might be wondering how you can take your training to the next level. Well… I’m not a nutritionist or a doctor or anything but I can tell you what has worked for me and tons of other women, and I have the stories and photos to prove it (if you’re interested, just ask me). That to me is better than any infomercial, advice from a dietitian (unless they’re a crossfitting dietitian and know what’s up), or doctor. Seriously…

1. Forget everything you have ever been told. This is different and that’s why it works and is getting so much attention now. So basically, you won’t get big cause you lift weight, it’s good to squat, whole wheat isn’t good for you, and machines are retarded and cause injuries cause they work your muscles in unnatural ways.

2. Challenge yourself! Every day should be a new day to hit a record, so do something new and leave feeling good about yourself. Go 10lbs heavier, use the taller box, hit a higher target, etc…

3. Sorry vegetarians and vegans, but eat some meat and fat! It’s good for you, I promise. If you are afraid of all the hormones and chemicals (and you’re not alone) or horrible ways these animals live or die, go grass fed, organic, cage free, and local! Yes I know it’s more expensive, but so are the doctor bills and the medications you’re on… and you can get off of those if you do things the right way with diet and exercise (another thing I have seen with my own eyes happen to our members).  Protein from soy, beans, nuts, etc. will “get you by”, but real protein (from real food like fish, meat, chicken, etc…) will make you thrive… and that’s what we want. I have heard stories of vegetarian or vegan girls who can not get pull ups for the life of them, and then start reintroducing meat back into their diet (after lots of convincing) and BAM! They got stronger… weird? Nope.

4. This is a sport and you are now an athlete. You’re gonna get bruised and scuffed up sometimes, so what. Participate in local events and join the fun! Whether you are cheering someone on or competing in the event, this is what the CrossFit community is all about. Get in on it!!

5. Try to do things this way for 30 days. That’s it, 1 month… what do you have to lose? The benefits that will come from this will be much much more than that.

till next time…

Happy Halloween!!! I hope everyone stays safe and has fun with whatever they do this year…I was planning on being a deviled egg, a costume I made for my husband last year that was so good I wanted to be that this year. It was too expensive for me to get everything though, so I settled on cavewoman… or rx paleo girl? That was cheesy. But yea, we’re having a Halloween Party at CrossFit Soul tonight at 7pm if anyone wants to come! I will be working out in costume and then partying after!

Anyway, I read this blog post today that was supposed to be inspiring to other women about CrossFit and how it changes you. One of the things that stuck out to me in this post was this girls confidence. Confidence is something MAJOR that comes with doing things you never thought you could do. It happens here all the time, whether its a pull up or a run or a weightlifting movement. That’s what is so cool about CrossFit, it takes normal people and turns them into confident athletes.

Your perception is another thing that changes. You can be nowhere near the gym and have to face something challenging and you will see it in a whole new light. That “challenge” instead of being something scary is now something fun to overcome. Your heath improves too, which makes illness and pain and all that start to go away. It’s amazing how many people I’ve known and heard of that go from being on meds they think they will have to take for life, to being on NOTHING thanks to CrossFit and healthy eating.

Body image and self-esteem is the last part. Yes, you likely will have to buy new clothes because you will start to get lean in places you always wanted to, and muscle will start to develop. BIG DEAL! That doesn’t mean though that you will not be able to fit into anything because you have muscles and the majority of “regular” womens clothes isn’t made for that. This belief is what keeps a lot of women away from CrossFit because of the fear of getting bulky and manly. It couldn’t be more untrue!!!  Come meet me or Coach Jessica… you’ll see.  The weightlifting we do here is in combination with a ton of other things, so you get strong while you get lean. The cardio endurance benefits are just as huge as the strength benefits…. not to mention the flexibility, posture, emotional well-being, energy, and ability to pretty much do any sport without a problem, because that’s how we train.

CrossFit is such an amazing program and it works for everyone… whether you are young or old, out of shape, lifelong athlete, yogi or gym rat. Yes we have our top athletes that love to compete and be bad asses, but in my opinion, doing something you’ve never done before or something that most of America doesn’t really care to dedicate time to…that’s pretty bad-ass too. I do CrossFit because I love how it makes me feel, I love how my body has changed, and I love working with people and helping them to improve their lives. The competing is great too (although not in public for me). So I wanna know… in what ways have you been changed because of CrossFit and what are your favorite aspects of this program?

Be Safe tonight!

We have a whole new group of women starting at CrossFit Soul and I couldn’t be more happy about it! I love to see women learn about how to do handstand push ups and oly lifts and swing kettlebells around. I love the smiles on their faces when they pull themselves up over the bar the first time or when they switch to a thinner band and get closer to an unassisted pull up! I think that has to be my favorite.

This work schedule has been really rough for me. It’s hard to dedicate so much time to so many different things and still stay stress-free and full of energy. I really feel grateful to have such an awesome job that gives me energy and motivation though… It happens almost every day: I’ll come in super tired at 6AM and meet with my early bird crew. Even though I couldn’t imagine working out at that ungodly hour, they KILL IT! They put so much into learning the movements and keeping their intensity up at the same time, I love it. Then comes my 8AM who are just awesome… they have been here a little longer and just amaze me sometimes with how far they have come. All this builds on my mental strength so come time for me to workout before I go to my night job I can get through it, usually by myself, and not let myself give up or slack.

This is what happens here in the CrossFit community. You feed off other people’s energy and you start to build on your strength… mind and body. Seriously. For some of you who are new it’s gonna be hard… but you’ve heard it before “nothing that is worth it is ever easy”. And this is SO worth it!

The one thing I can suggest to those of you who are new is to get your nutrition on track. That is SO important. Nutrition is the foundation of your heath and fitness. It’s what’s gonna make you feel better faster and get stronger, it’s gonna get you those results you want quicker, and it’s gonna be the reason you realize that this program is not a short term quick fix weight loss thing. I HATE hearing that… someone told me yesterday that they overheard a personal trainer at another gym talking crap about how CrossFit is not for people new to fitness and how it’s a “weight loss fad”. REALLY?! That guy obviously knows nothing about anything….

You belong here, wherever you are at in your fitness and health. The best part about it is that you are not alone here, this community will carry you through and help you continue reaching your goals for as long as you want… hopefully for life  :)

Busy week! I started up classes again this week and in the middle of continuing to work on getting CrossFit Soul up and running, I have little to NO time to do anything else! So, I apologize for my lack of updates…

You know, my mom is always calling me about these fitness shows that she sees on T.V. I’m guilty of watching them: “Too Fat for 15″, “The Biggest Loser” and whatever other shows come up that have to do with weight loss and working out. One of the shows my mom mentioned not too long ago was this Jillian Michaels chick… Well – I recently saw a pretty amusing article about the so-called fitness expert who has a bajillion bull crap DVD’s out and “inspires” people by what I’m assuming is the hundreds of thousands… maybe more.

The LA Times recently came out with an article exposing Jillian for what she really is, a fraud.

“Typical viewers think she’s great, yet the collective jaws of professional trainers hit the floor after witnessing her regular displays of poor technique and unsafe training practices.

Michaels obtained some introductory fitness certifications (National Exercise & Sports Trainers Assn. and Aerobics and Fitness Assn. of America) 17 years ago and does not seem to ever have recertified. The biography on her website goes on and on about her multimedia endeavors, but there is not a single mention of any health-and-fitness education or credentials.

And now, seemingly without any qualifications, Michaels is teaching amateurs how to use kettle bells in her latest DVD, “Shred-It With Weights.” Her toned, tanned and possibly Photoshopped physique stands proudly on the cover holding a kettle bell, while a bubble on the cover exclaims, “Lose up to 5 pounds a week!”

How about this, stop wasting your time and money with crappy quick-fix DVD’s and fitness programs and start doing something REAL. Yes, I know, a lot of us don’t have time… we have families, jobs, responsibilities… but we also have to take care of ourselves. All of these things that take up so much of our time can also cause stress, lack of sleep, bad habits, etc. The CrossFit community is one that focuses on long-term health and fitness. I say health and fitness because while the two go together, they affect us in so many different ways. Improvements in our mental health and nutritional health are huge perks of joining the CrossFit community. The fitness comes with the hard work and commitment to training. None of this is easy and it definitely isn’t something you will maintain long-term by watching a DVD.

Also, look for credentials when you walk into any facility… Lots of people claim to now offer “CrossFit Training” yet they do it out of their facility that also offers “sport specific training, CrossFit Style”… uhh, WHAT?!  Anyway I’m rambling…. the point is to get out there and find someone qualified that can offer you a serious fitness program that you can enjoy and one that will get you a healthy body, mind, and spirit. Lots of people are just out there to make money off the next big thing, and you could be putting yourself at risk by trying to take the easy way out.

“What made an unqualified Jillian Michaels decide to create a kettle bell DVD? I imagine she received a call one day from her agent that went something like this:

Agent: Jillie! How’s the yelling at fat people business?

Michaels: Tiring. Almost as tiring as counting all my money.

Agent: Uh-huh. Listen, I’ve got an idea. It’s totally hot right now. Two words: “kettle bells,” baby.

Michaels: What’s a kettle bell?

Agent: Some kind of bowling ball thingy. It will be a real moneymaker!

Michaels: Money? I’m in.”

The article goes on to say that “When a person proclaims the only way to get in shape is through hard work (true), then adds her name and image to a brand of diet pills (hypocritical), then faces a class-action lawsuit over the lack of efficacy regarding said diet pills (unsurprising), coupled with myriad examples of unqualified and unsafe training along with outrageous weight loss claims, then it’s time to find a new source of fitness education and inspiration.”

Right on.

Unlearning Negative Self-Talk

I’m reading this book called “Fed Up! Free Yourself From the Diet Trap”. Mostly, I’m learning about how to treat people with eating disorders who come through the doors of CrossFit Soul. The mental health field has a lot of great treatment out there, but there is always room to grow the field. I really hope that once I graduate (only 6 months away!) I can start helping people find a healthy way of life through CrossFit training and eating clean.

So anyway, one of the topics in the chapter I’m on is about negative self-talk. We all hear about positive self-talk and how to pump ourselves up for certain workouts and competitions, but what about the negative stuff that still lingers in our heads? Especially when you are first starting a fitness routine, lots of negative stuff might be floating through your head without even noticing it…

“I can’t do something that intense!”
“I don’t think CrossFit is for me”
“I’m too old/ fat/ skinny/ lazy, etc..”

All of these things that we think and say reflect how we feel about ourselves internally. If you don’t FEEL confident it’s gonna be a lot harder to find motivation, to do well at your workouts, and to push yourself to new levels… past those limits that so many of us set for ourselves. One of the tips in my book is to imagine saying these negative things to a young child or to your best friend…

“You could never do something like that”
“You are too fat/ ugly/ skinny/ lazy to do that!”
“I really don’t think CrossFit is for you”

Never right?! I would NEVER tell someone I cared about that they just didn’t have it in them to do something challenging! How would I ever inspire? How would I help people? How would I ever get any members!!? haha. All that would do is cause someone embarrassment, shame, and pain. Well, when we say things like that to ourselves it does the same exact thing. So think about that…. Wendy Oliver-Pyatt, the author of my book, suggests each time you notice yourself saying something negative to imagine a huge stop sign. Stop those thoughts and then rephrase them for something less abusive…

“I should try something new”
“Lots of people do CrossFit, maybe I can too”
“I am unique, special, motivated, and willing to work hard”

“Look at yourself with affection and compassion, just as you would look at a loved one. When you do, you will be amazed at the psychic energy you free up to pursue your goals and the lessening of the burden you carry.” – Wendy Oliver-Pyatt

Strength Training for Women

Heather Bergeron at the 2010 CF Games

So here I am, a couple weeks from opening my own gym and thinking about how I’m gonna market CrossFit to all the women I speak to… Even with all the arguments out there about how great strength training… and I mean REAL strength training is for women, you still hear the same things about women not wanting to “get big”, being afraid to lift heavy weight, and feeling like programs like CrossFit just aren’t for them. People like my mom for example, insist on working on machines and avoiding doing things like deadlifts and weighted squats because they are afraid to get hurt, when really they can avoid getting hurt by getting stronger! Yes CrossFit is appealing to very athletic types, but it works for everyone. I was NOT athletic at all when I started, shit I could barely do a push up, but it really does help you to find that strength…

So here is another article I read today about all the benefits you can gain:

  1. You Will Be Physically Stronger.
Increasing your strength will make you far less dependent upon others for assistance in daily living. Chores will be easier, lifting kids, groceries and laundry will no longer push you to the max. If your maximum strength is increased, daily tasks and routine exercise will be far less likely to cause injury. Research studies conclude that even moderate weight training can increase a woman’s strength by 30 to 50 percent. Research also shows that women can develop their strength at the same rate as men.
  2. You Will Lose Body Fat.
Studies found that the average woman who strength trains two to three times a week for two months will gain nearly two pounds of muscle and will lose 3.5 pounds of fat. As your lean muscle increases so does your resting metabolism, and you burn more calories all day long. Generally speaking, for each pound of muscle you gain, you burn 35 to 50 more calories each day. That can really add up.
  3. You Will Gain Strength Without Bulk.
Researchers also found that unlike men, women typically don’t gain size from strength training, because compared to men, women have 10 to 30 times less of the hormones that cause muscle hypertrophy. You will, however, develop muscle tone and definition. This is a bonus.
  4. You Decrease Your Risk Of Osteoporosis.
Research has found that weight training can increase spinal bone mineral density (and enhance bone modeling) by 13 percent in six months. This, coupled with an adequate amount of dietary calcium, can be a women’s best defense against osteoporosis.
  5. You Will Improve Your Athletic Performance.
Over and over research concludes that strength training improves athletic ability in all but the very elite athletes (See Article). Golfers can significantly increase their driving power. Cyclists are able to continue for longer periods of time with less fatigue. Skiers improve technique and reduce injury. Whatever sport you play, strength training has been shown to improve overall performance as well as decrease the risk of injury.
  6. You Will Reduce Your Risk Of Injury, Back Pain and Arthritis.
Strength training not only builds stronger muscles, but also builds stronger connective tissues and increases joint stability. This acts as reinforcement for the joints and helps prevent injury. A recent 12-year study showed that strengthening the low-back muscles had an 80 percent success rate in eliminating or alleviating low-back pain. Other studies have indicated that weight training can ease the pain of osteoarthritis and strengthen joints.
  7. You Will Reduce Your Risk of Heart Disease.
Weight training can improve cardiovascular health in several ways, including lowering LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, increasing HDL (“good”) cholesterol and lowering blood pressure. When cardiovascular exercise is added (like in CrossFit!), these benefits are maximized.
  8. You Will Reduce Your Risk of Diabetes.
In addition, weight training may improve the way the body processes sugar, which may reduce the risk of diabetes. Adult-onset diabetes is a growing problem for women and men. Research indicates that weight training can increase glucose utilization in the body by 23 percent in four months.
  9. It Is Never Too Late To Benefit.
Women in their 70s and 80s have built up significant strength through weight training and studies show that strength improvements are possible at any age. Note, however, that a strength training professional should always supervise older participants.
  10. You Will Improve Your Attitude And Fight Depression.
A Harvard study found that 10 weeks of strength training reduced clinical depression symptoms more successfully than standard counseling did. Women who strength train commonly report feeling more confident and capable as a result of their program, all important factors in fighting depression.

God, I can attest to so many of these. My in-laws have had amazing benefits, for example. My mother in-law has had horrible back pain her entire life, and tells me now that she feels no pain. My father in-law, once on 11 different medications for diabetes, cholesterol, and a bunch of other crap is now down to only one. This program works. Plain and simple. If you feel like you are at a point where nothing has worked for you, it’s about time to try something new right?! My new gym CrossFit Soul will be opening in South Miami very soon. Maybe it’s time to make that change…

Look, Ma: No Bands!

Guess what? You’re all famous!  Haha… yea, RxGirls Miami got published in the CrossFit Journal. That’s a BIG deal! What an honor it was when CrossFit HQ contacted me and asked me to write something for them. What I wrote about was you all, and how much I enjoy working with you and helping you in any way I can while you work toward your goals. You are all very inspiring people, and I say people because I know there are men out there that read my blog too (even though they don’t like to admit it at the box)! So thank you all for being you… you help to keep me inspired and I hope that I can continue to do the same  :) Here is some of the article. You can check out the full 6-page article on the CrossFit Journal!

Through her RX Girls: Miami blog, Monik Lopez-Calleja is starting a global community of strong women who believe in themselves.

The first time I stepped foot into a CrossFit box was for the grand opening of CrossFit Kingdom. That workout killed me, but it also did something else: it showed me that I could have fun working out. My husband and I signed up that day and committed to three months.

Those first two weeks were some of the most challenging workouts of my life, but in a very short time I began to feel a change in myself. I was hooked. Every day after I came home, I would post on Facebook what I had just done. When I hit a PR, I wrote about it. When I got my first pull-up, I wrote about it.

I would also spend a lot of time on different CrossFit blogs reading motivating stories about how people’s lives had changed because of the program. I felt more motivated than I had ever been, and I wanted to see if other people were as stoked about this as I was. What I found out is there are tons of people out there who felt the same way. I started talking more to the girls at CrossFit Kingdom and sharing stories with them. That’s when I decided to start my own blog, RX Girls: Miami.

Great post from the site “Pullups and Paleo”. This post couldn’t be further from the truth! I have had the same experience with CrossFit and I’m stronger, leaner, and healthier than I have EVER been… and lemme tell you I spent hours at the gym on a spin bike, in a “cardio weight lifting class” and in pilates. Nothing compares to CrossFit. Dial in on your nutrition, start eating clean and pushing yourself at the box and you WILL see results. It won’t be easy, but it’s worth the feeling of accomplishment and the confidence you will gain from this program.

I think I’m preaching to the choir at this point, but really. Lift some damn weights ladies, and make ‘em heavy. You. Will. NOT. Bulk. Up.

I’ve lost 1 pant size and I’m slowly creeping down to a size 2. I didn’t spend 60 minutes/5 days a week on the elliptical. I spent a few brief moments lifting some heavy ass weight over my head, and squatting it down low. It came from cleaning my body weight and dead-lifting 1.5x my weight. Except I don’t really know what I weigh any more because… wait for it… I don’t care. I think it’s 130. That’s what I tell people if they ask. All I know is that the more weight I add to the bar, the better I look and feel.

Heavy ass weight. Do it.”

Happy Birthday to me!

That’s me at Venice “Muscle” Beach, taking a lunch break during the CrossFit Games. I just went to watch and network that weekend, but what an inspiring event that was… Those women (and men) who compete are so strong and amazing.

So another awesome year has gone by and I gotta say, this one has really been a good one. A year ago I found CrossFit. A year ago all I knew was spinning, pilates, yoga, and the occassional “weight training” class. I was intimidated when I fist stepped in…. I saw all the kettlebells, boxes, barbells and rings and thought “there is NO way I can do this stuff”. Aside from that initial feeling though, I also felt really excited because this was something I had never seen or tried before. The atmosphere was welcoming, there were women lifting heavy weight and they didn’t look like dudes, and actually, they made it look easy. I loved the challenge!

After that first workout I committed to 3 months and I haven’t stopped since. In fact, I completely fell in love with CrossFit. I wanted to learn all I could about how to lift, how to do pull ups, how to use the rings and how to become a Coach. A year later, here I am. The experience I’ve had this past year has been amazing. I have met so many cool people with so much knowledge that have helped me to become the Coach I am today… and I don’t plan to stop growing any time soon. The more I learn the more I become inspired to work with people and introduce them to this program that has changed my life. I feel better physically and mentally, I look better, perform better, and I care more about what I eat and how I treat my body… something I was never taught from any fitness facility before joining this community.

So I read the CrossFit Central website a lot because I love the programs they have for women. I found some quotes on there recently that I really liked:

“The CrossFit Women classes buzz with energy, commradary, and achievement. It seems that the reoccurring experience is empowerment. CrossFit empowers women, not only in fitness, but in everyday life. When you achieve something that was deemed too intense for women or something you thought you weren’t capable of – you can conquer the world. You can overcome your battles, fears, and mental barriers outside of the gym.”

“It may sound extreme, but there’s an undeniable connection between our physical health and our mental health, and I’m the happiest I’ve been in years. It’s not about losing weight, but becoming confident and watching myself make progress every month, knowing that I can push myself hard and be stronger because of it.”

“There are no mirrors, we all know that we look like hell, because we’ve just been through hell (and survived). I know that with this group of ladies, it’s the one place where I’m expected to be powerful instead of pretty.”

How do you all feel about your experience with CrossFit? How has it changed you and how do you feel it’s different (or the same) from other programs you have tried in the past? Lemme know!

I have some good recipes coming soon so stay tuned!!

One of the coaches at my box sent this to me in an email and I wanted to share it with you guys… It made me think about how many different women come into the gym wanting to look a certain way, weigh a certain number, and avoid certain muscles from growing. The reality is, you can’t. We are all different in our own way. Some of us have big thighs, some have no ass, some have big arms or shoulders… you can’t avoid any of that. What it comes down to is getting yourself healthy. Healthy at the size that YOU were meant to be. Be proud of your body and your strength!

Raising Your Self-Esteem

Self-esteem can have a huge effect on how you perform inside of the gym. Take for example, the girl who comes in that might be a little overweight and wants to get into shape. Being overweight has absolutely nothing to do with her self-worth, although she might think so. When faced with a difficult workout she might think she is too overweight to do it, she might not feel strong enough, good enough, she might lack the confidence to even try it.

Obviously, this can have a longstanding affect unless this girl decides to first change the way she thinks, and then change her actions. “Since low self-esteem is a result of negative thoughts and feelings, it’s important to alter how you think and feel about yourself”. This article I found from Go Bonkers (a mental health magazine) gives some great advice about what you can do to raise your self-esteem. I applied them to what you can do inside and outside of the gym:

  • Identify your strengths: Appreciate your unique strengths and talents. There are many things you do well, so create a list. Are you a good motivator for others? You are here, so that means you are motivated. Are you a good cook? Share your recipes with others at the box!
  • Recognize achievements: Remember the first time you put half your body weight overhead? How about more than your body weight? What about the first time you completed a workout you thought you would never get through? Take pride in those things, large or small they are accomplishments!
  • Love your body: Accept and love your body “as-is”. Love yourself the way you are right now. Today. Write down your ten best attributes (you do have 10), so start looking! Once you love your body, you will want to do all you can to take care and nourish it with exercise and good nutrition.
  • Set Goals:  Set attainable short term goals and reward yourself when you reach them. This will motivate you to continue trying and growing as a person.
  • Feel the love: Acknowledge the love in your life. Make a list of people who have shown care or concern for you. When you feel lonely or unworthy, read that list.
  • Learn from mistakes: Don’t over-react to errors. We all mess up. Did you eat really crappy? Feel like you cheated on a workout by counting “bad” reps or going light on your weight so you could finish faster? Learn from that and move on. There’s always tomorrow!
  • Gather good: Surround yourself with positive, healthy people. Lucky you, you are a part of an amazing community! Take advantage of that and get to know other members, join us for our special beach days or events, immerse yourself in the community.

Every day is a new day to start over. You might have had negative patterns your entire life, and that’s Ok. Life is about learning and growing and making it what you want it to be. Do what makes you happy. Do what makes you feel good. You are worth it and you have the power to do it!
