Messages about You and Your Body

Healthy bodies come in all different shapes and sizes

I was listening to a talk radio show this morning where the discussion was about mother’s effect on their children’s body image and development of eating disorders… this got me thinking. What are some of the ways in which parents can influence our thoughts and feelings about ourselves? I remember when I was younger my dad used to ALWAYS pinch the sides on my waist and tell me I was getting chubby. Those of you who know me might find that hard to believe, and so did I being that I’ve pretty much been skinny my entire life. See even that, I wrote “pretty much” and was about to delete it but the reality is I have always been thin. So anyway, regardless if I didn’t believe him or not I somehow developed somewhat of an eating disorder years later. I was always really concerned about how I looked and never wanted to gain weight while not doing much about how I ate or how active I was. I’m not saying it’s his fault or anything, but I would be pretty ignorant to say that it had absolutely nothing to do with how I felt about my body. Luckily nowdays I would never think about resorting to unhealthy ways of losing weight. I work hard today in my sport and as a result, my body transformed to what I always wanted it to be…. the best part is it came without the added stress or shame and got replaced by confidence and energy.

How many of you can relate to that? Some comments people make just stick with us, whether they were meant to be helpful or not. For example, this girl on the show was talking about how she still remembers after losing some weight being approached by a friend who told her she looked “spectacular”. Even though this was supposed to be a compliment, it made her feel like when she was heavier she was just “average”, and she hated being average, she wanted to look spectacular all the time! So what kind of messages do we send to ourselves and others when we think about ideal bodies and even when helping people to lose weight in the gym? I try my best not to talk about pounds on the scale but I never realized how simply telling someone they look great because they’ve lost weight can be somewhat negative. So how do we change this?

First, if you have kids it’s really important to watch what you say and how you act around them. Avoiding talking about your own negative thoughts about your body in front of them and be a positive role model. Focus on healthy food and staying active and that will promote positive behaviors and feelings in your children.  Next, I think with training the focus needs to be completely different. We focus on health here and to be honest, some people are at a very unhealthy weight. We want them to be in a healthy range, so we take body fat measurements and encourage nutritional changes rather than dieting. We talk about how nutrition relates to performance, health and well-being rather than getting you thin. It’s hard sometimes, because a lot of people come in here with a “goal weight”… a number in mind that doesn’t even make sense sometimes! You need to change your perspective…

CrossFit Beauty in Strength

The best way to do this I think is to separate from people who make you feel bad about yourself and your body. Whether it’s a boyfriend, friend or family member, speak up and defend your efforts to be healthy. Tell people to stop focusing on you and how you look and start supporting how you feel and how healthy you are. If you are in a relationship with someone who puts you down, ditch them! You don’t need that. Surround yourself with good people and you will start to feel good. CrossFit is a great community. It’s not like the gym where you go in and wait in line for a machine after some person you don’t even know. You make connections and friendships here that will support you in your efforts to become a better, stronger, healthier person.

So next time you start feeling down about how you look, take a minute to think about where these feelings are coming from and who in your life might be contributing to these negative feelings. Then get your head right and speak up! You deserve to feel good about yourself!

This is a GREAT post from our friends over at CrossFit South Bay in California. I realized it’s been a while since I wrote about women in the CrossFit community and I need to start researching about this year’s upcoming Games competitors. We have some amazingly strong and awesomely athletic women to look up to in this community, and they deserve a shout out. More on that in the weeks to come…

Knowledge is Power

best cf women pic ever - from Orange Coast CrossFit

Hello Hello! I know it’s been a while… I try my best to keep up once a week but with all I have going on, it gets tough sometimes. I promise that I will update more after mid-December when I finish my internship and have more time! I was in Ramona, California this weekend for the CrossFit Kids cert and it was awesome! While on the plane, I had some time to sit down and start reading The Paleo Solution. Great so far, and there are some awesome inspiring stories throughout. One of them got me thinking about my journey transitioning from typical eating/working out/living to what I do now. All of this was so new to me, so different and so not what I wanted to do at first. This woman went through the same… unhappy with herself, 2 kids, feeling blah about life and wanted something new…

Most people don’t want to work hard. If you are reading this blog and you eat clean (and the real definition of clean, not the general public’s definition) and do CrossFit, you are different than most people. You have to get used to that. Basically anything you talk about that involves Paleo or lifting heavy weight or liking the muscles you have and calluses on your hands is gonna get you some weird looks. Most people I talk to (outside of my gym) think I’m crazy. Luckily I found an awesome group of people who love the same things I do; workouts that challenge my limits, having a hard muscly body, and feeling awesome and energetic most days of the week. I don’t care about partying, I don’t care about eating cupcakes and cream puffs, and I really don’t care about doing a workout that makes it easy for me to get “fit” in 5 min (which doesn’t exist by the way)… unless you’re doing something like Fran.

If you are new to all of this, you might be wondering how you can take your training to the next level. Well… I’m not a nutritionist or a doctor or anything but I can tell you what has worked for me and tons of other women, and I have the stories and photos to prove it (if you’re interested, just ask me). That to me is better than any infomercial, advice from a dietitian (unless they’re a crossfitting dietitian and know what’s up), or doctor. Seriously…

1. Forget everything you have ever been told. This is different and that’s why it works and is getting so much attention now. So basically, you won’t get big cause you lift weight, it’s good to squat, whole wheat isn’t good for you, and machines are retarded and cause injuries cause they work your muscles in unnatural ways.

2. Challenge yourself! Every day should be a new day to hit a record, so do something new and leave feeling good about yourself. Go 10lbs heavier, use the taller box, hit a higher target, etc…

3. Sorry vegetarians and vegans, but eat some meat and fat! It’s good for you, I promise. If you are afraid of all the hormones and chemicals (and you’re not alone) or horrible ways these animals live or die, go grass fed, organic, cage free, and local! Yes I know it’s more expensive, but so are the doctor bills and the medications you’re on… and you can get off of those if you do things the right way with diet and exercise (another thing I have seen with my own eyes happen to our members).  Protein from soy, beans, nuts, etc. will “get you by”, but real protein (from real food like fish, meat, chicken, etc…) will make you thrive… and that’s what we want. I have heard stories of vegetarian or vegan girls who can not get pull ups for the life of them, and then start reintroducing meat back into their diet (after lots of convincing) and BAM! They got stronger… weird? Nope.

4. This is a sport and you are now an athlete. You’re gonna get bruised and scuffed up sometimes, so what. Participate in local events and join the fun! Whether you are cheering someone on or competing in the event, this is what the CrossFit community is all about. Get in on it!!

5. Try to do things this way for 30 days. That’s it, 1 month… what do you have to lose? The benefits that will come from this will be much much more than that.

till next time…

Happy Halloween!!! I hope everyone stays safe and has fun with whatever they do this year…I was planning on being a deviled egg, a costume I made for my husband last year that was so good I wanted to be that this year. It was too expensive for me to get everything though, so I settled on cavewoman… or rx paleo girl? That was cheesy. But yea, we’re having a Halloween Party at CrossFit Soul tonight at 7pm if anyone wants to come! I will be working out in costume and then partying after!

Anyway, I read this blog post today that was supposed to be inspiring to other women about CrossFit and how it changes you. One of the things that stuck out to me in this post was this girls confidence. Confidence is something MAJOR that comes with doing things you never thought you could do. It happens here all the time, whether its a pull up or a run or a weightlifting movement. That’s what is so cool about CrossFit, it takes normal people and turns them into confident athletes.

Your perception is another thing that changes. You can be nowhere near the gym and have to face something challenging and you will see it in a whole new light. That “challenge” instead of being something scary is now something fun to overcome. Your heath improves too, which makes illness and pain and all that start to go away. It’s amazing how many people I’ve known and heard of that go from being on meds they think they will have to take for life, to being on NOTHING thanks to CrossFit and healthy eating.

Body image and self-esteem is the last part. Yes, you likely will have to buy new clothes because you will start to get lean in places you always wanted to, and muscle will start to develop. BIG DEAL! That doesn’t mean though that you will not be able to fit into anything because you have muscles and the majority of “regular” womens clothes isn’t made for that. This belief is what keeps a lot of women away from CrossFit because of the fear of getting bulky and manly. It couldn’t be more untrue!!!  Come meet me or Coach Jessica… you’ll see.  The weightlifting we do here is in combination with a ton of other things, so you get strong while you get lean. The cardio endurance benefits are just as huge as the strength benefits…. not to mention the flexibility, posture, emotional well-being, energy, and ability to pretty much do any sport without a problem, because that’s how we train.

CrossFit is such an amazing program and it works for everyone… whether you are young or old, out of shape, lifelong athlete, yogi or gym rat. Yes we have our top athletes that love to compete and be bad asses, but in my opinion, doing something you’ve never done before or something that most of America doesn’t really care to dedicate time to…that’s pretty bad-ass too. I do CrossFit because I love how it makes me feel, I love how my body has changed, and I love working with people and helping them to improve their lives. The competing is great too (although not in public for me). So I wanna know… in what ways have you been changed because of CrossFit and what are your favorite aspects of this program?

Be Safe tonight!

We have a whole new group of women starting at CrossFit Soul and I couldn’t be more happy about it! I love to see women learn about how to do handstand push ups and oly lifts and swing kettlebells around. I love the smiles on their faces when they pull themselves up over the bar the first time or when they switch to a thinner band and get closer to an unassisted pull up! I think that has to be my favorite.

This work schedule has been really rough for me. It’s hard to dedicate so much time to so many different things and still stay stress-free and full of energy. I really feel grateful to have such an awesome job that gives me energy and motivation though… It happens almost every day: I’ll come in super tired at 6AM and meet with my early bird crew. Even though I couldn’t imagine working out at that ungodly hour, they KILL IT! They put so much into learning the movements and keeping their intensity up at the same time, I love it. Then comes my 8AM who are just awesome… they have been here a little longer and just amaze me sometimes with how far they have come. All this builds on my mental strength so come time for me to workout before I go to my night job I can get through it, usually by myself, and not let myself give up or slack.

This is what happens here in the CrossFit community. You feed off other people’s energy and you start to build on your strength… mind and body. Seriously. For some of you who are new it’s gonna be hard… but you’ve heard it before “nothing that is worth it is ever easy”. And this is SO worth it!

The one thing I can suggest to those of you who are new is to get your nutrition on track. That is SO important. Nutrition is the foundation of your heath and fitness. It’s what’s gonna make you feel better faster and get stronger, it’s gonna get you those results you want quicker, and it’s gonna be the reason you realize that this program is not a short term quick fix weight loss thing. I HATE hearing that… someone told me yesterday that they overheard a personal trainer at another gym talking crap about how CrossFit is not for people new to fitness and how it’s a “weight loss fad”. REALLY?! That guy obviously knows nothing about anything….

You belong here, wherever you are at in your fitness and health. The best part about it is that you are not alone here, this community will carry you through and help you continue reaching your goals for as long as you want… hopefully for life  :)

Busy week! I started up classes again this week and in the middle of continuing to work on getting CrossFit Soul up and running, I have little to NO time to do anything else! So, I apologize for my lack of updates…

You know, my mom is always calling me about these fitness shows that she sees on T.V. I’m guilty of watching them: “Too Fat for 15″, “The Biggest Loser” and whatever other shows come up that have to do with weight loss and working out. One of the shows my mom mentioned not too long ago was this Jillian Michaels chick… Well – I recently saw a pretty amusing article about the so-called fitness expert who has a bajillion bull crap DVD’s out and “inspires” people by what I’m assuming is the hundreds of thousands… maybe more.

The LA Times recently came out with an article exposing Jillian for what she really is, a fraud.

“Typical viewers think she’s great, yet the collective jaws of professional trainers hit the floor after witnessing her regular displays of poor technique and unsafe training practices.

Michaels obtained some introductory fitness certifications (National Exercise & Sports Trainers Assn. and Aerobics and Fitness Assn. of America) 17 years ago and does not seem to ever have recertified. The biography on her website goes on and on about her multimedia endeavors, but there is not a single mention of any health-and-fitness education or credentials.

And now, seemingly without any qualifications, Michaels is teaching amateurs how to use kettle bells in her latest DVD, “Shred-It With Weights.” Her toned, tanned and possibly Photoshopped physique stands proudly on the cover holding a kettle bell, while a bubble on the cover exclaims, “Lose up to 5 pounds a week!”

How about this, stop wasting your time and money with crappy quick-fix DVD’s and fitness programs and start doing something REAL. Yes, I know, a lot of us don’t have time… we have families, jobs, responsibilities… but we also have to take care of ourselves. All of these things that take up so much of our time can also cause stress, lack of sleep, bad habits, etc. The CrossFit community is one that focuses on long-term health and fitness. I say health and fitness because while the two go together, they affect us in so many different ways. Improvements in our mental health and nutritional health are huge perks of joining the CrossFit community. The fitness comes with the hard work and commitment to training. None of this is easy and it definitely isn’t something you will maintain long-term by watching a DVD.

Also, look for credentials when you walk into any facility… Lots of people claim to now offer “CrossFit Training” yet they do it out of their facility that also offers “sport specific training, CrossFit Style”… uhh, WHAT?!  Anyway I’m rambling…. the point is to get out there and find someone qualified that can offer you a serious fitness program that you can enjoy and one that will get you a healthy body, mind, and spirit. Lots of people are just out there to make money off the next big thing, and you could be putting yourself at risk by trying to take the easy way out.

“What made an unqualified Jillian Michaels decide to create a kettle bell DVD? I imagine she received a call one day from her agent that went something like this:

Agent: Jillie! How’s the yelling at fat people business?

Michaels: Tiring. Almost as tiring as counting all my money.

Agent: Uh-huh. Listen, I’ve got an idea. It’s totally hot right now. Two words: “kettle bells,” baby.

Michaels: What’s a kettle bell?

Agent: Some kind of bowling ball thingy. It will be a real moneymaker!

Michaels: Money? I’m in.”

The article goes on to say that “When a person proclaims the only way to get in shape is through hard work (true), then adds her name and image to a brand of diet pills (hypocritical), then faces a class-action lawsuit over the lack of efficacy regarding said diet pills (unsurprising), coupled with myriad examples of unqualified and unsafe training along with outrageous weight loss claims, then it’s time to find a new source of fitness education and inspiration.”

Right on.

Unlearning Negative Self-Talk

I’m reading this book called “Fed Up! Free Yourself From the Diet Trap”. Mostly, I’m learning about how to treat people with eating disorders who come through the doors of CrossFit Soul. The mental health field has a lot of great treatment out there, but there is always room to grow the field. I really hope that once I graduate (only 6 months away!) I can start helping people find a healthy way of life through CrossFit training and eating clean.

So anyway, one of the topics in the chapter I’m on is about negative self-talk. We all hear about positive self-talk and how to pump ourselves up for certain workouts and competitions, but what about the negative stuff that still lingers in our heads? Especially when you are first starting a fitness routine, lots of negative stuff might be floating through your head without even noticing it…

“I can’t do something that intense!”
“I don’t think CrossFit is for me”
“I’m too old/ fat/ skinny/ lazy, etc..”

All of these things that we think and say reflect how we feel about ourselves internally. If you don’t FEEL confident it’s gonna be a lot harder to find motivation, to do well at your workouts, and to push yourself to new levels… past those limits that so many of us set for ourselves. One of the tips in my book is to imagine saying these negative things to a young child or to your best friend…

“You could never do something like that”
“You are too fat/ ugly/ skinny/ lazy to do that!”
“I really don’t think CrossFit is for you”

Never right?! I would NEVER tell someone I cared about that they just didn’t have it in them to do something challenging! How would I ever inspire? How would I help people? How would I ever get any members!!? haha. All that would do is cause someone embarrassment, shame, and pain. Well, when we say things like that to ourselves it does the same exact thing. So think about that…. Wendy Oliver-Pyatt, the author of my book, suggests each time you notice yourself saying something negative to imagine a huge stop sign. Stop those thoughts and then rephrase them for something less abusive…

“I should try something new”
“Lots of people do CrossFit, maybe I can too”
“I am unique, special, motivated, and willing to work hard”

“Look at yourself with affection and compassion, just as you would look at a loved one. When you do, you will be amazed at the psychic energy you free up to pursue your goals and the lessening of the burden you carry.” – Wendy Oliver-Pyatt

Strength Training for Women

Heather Bergeron at the 2010 CF Games

So here I am, a couple weeks from opening my own gym and thinking about how I’m gonna market CrossFit to all the women I speak to… Even with all the arguments out there about how great strength training… and I mean REAL strength training is for women, you still hear the same things about women not wanting to “get big”, being afraid to lift heavy weight, and feeling like programs like CrossFit just aren’t for them. People like my mom for example, insist on working on machines and avoiding doing things like deadlifts and weighted squats because they are afraid to get hurt, when really they can avoid getting hurt by getting stronger! Yes CrossFit is appealing to very athletic types, but it works for everyone. I was NOT athletic at all when I started, shit I could barely do a push up, but it really does help you to find that strength…

So here is another article I read today about all the benefits you can gain:

  1. You Will Be Physically Stronger.
Increasing your strength will make you far less dependent upon others for assistance in daily living. Chores will be easier, lifting kids, groceries and laundry will no longer push you to the max. If your maximum strength is increased, daily tasks and routine exercise will be far less likely to cause injury. Research studies conclude that even moderate weight training can increase a woman’s strength by 30 to 50 percent. Research also shows that women can develop their strength at the same rate as men.
  2. You Will Lose Body Fat.
Studies found that the average woman who strength trains two to three times a week for two months will gain nearly two pounds of muscle and will lose 3.5 pounds of fat. As your lean muscle increases so does your resting metabolism, and you burn more calories all day long. Generally speaking, for each pound of muscle you gain, you burn 35 to 50 more calories each day. That can really add up.
  3. You Will Gain Strength Without Bulk.
Researchers also found that unlike men, women typically don’t gain size from strength training, because compared to men, women have 10 to 30 times less of the hormones that cause muscle hypertrophy. You will, however, develop muscle tone and definition. This is a bonus.
  4. You Decrease Your Risk Of Osteoporosis.
Research has found that weight training can increase spinal bone mineral density (and enhance bone modeling) by 13 percent in six months. This, coupled with an adequate amount of dietary calcium, can be a women’s best defense against osteoporosis.
  5. You Will Improve Your Athletic Performance.
Over and over research concludes that strength training improves athletic ability in all but the very elite athletes (See Article). Golfers can significantly increase their driving power. Cyclists are able to continue for longer periods of time with less fatigue. Skiers improve technique and reduce injury. Whatever sport you play, strength training has been shown to improve overall performance as well as decrease the risk of injury.
  6. You Will Reduce Your Risk Of Injury, Back Pain and Arthritis.
Strength training not only builds stronger muscles, but also builds stronger connective tissues and increases joint stability. This acts as reinforcement for the joints and helps prevent injury. A recent 12-year study showed that strengthening the low-back muscles had an 80 percent success rate in eliminating or alleviating low-back pain. Other studies have indicated that weight training can ease the pain of osteoarthritis and strengthen joints.
  7. You Will Reduce Your Risk of Heart Disease.
Weight training can improve cardiovascular health in several ways, including lowering LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, increasing HDL (“good”) cholesterol and lowering blood pressure. When cardiovascular exercise is added (like in CrossFit!), these benefits are maximized.
  8. You Will Reduce Your Risk of Diabetes.
In addition, weight training may improve the way the body processes sugar, which may reduce the risk of diabetes. Adult-onset diabetes is a growing problem for women and men. Research indicates that weight training can increase glucose utilization in the body by 23 percent in four months.
  9. It Is Never Too Late To Benefit.
Women in their 70s and 80s have built up significant strength through weight training and studies show that strength improvements are possible at any age. Note, however, that a strength training professional should always supervise older participants.
  10. You Will Improve Your Attitude And Fight Depression.
A Harvard study found that 10 weeks of strength training reduced clinical depression symptoms more successfully than standard counseling did. Women who strength train commonly report feeling more confident and capable as a result of their program, all important factors in fighting depression.

God, I can attest to so many of these. My in-laws have had amazing benefits, for example. My mother in-law has had horrible back pain her entire life, and tells me now that she feels no pain. My father in-law, once on 11 different medications for diabetes, cholesterol, and a bunch of other crap is now down to only one. This program works. Plain and simple. If you feel like you are at a point where nothing has worked for you, it’s about time to try something new right?! My new gym CrossFit Soul will be opening in South Miami very soon. Maybe it’s time to make that change…

Happy Birthday to me!

That’s me at Venice “Muscle” Beach, taking a lunch break during the CrossFit Games. I just went to watch and network that weekend, but what an inspiring event that was… Those women (and men) who compete are so strong and amazing.

So another awesome year has gone by and I gotta say, this one has really been a good one. A year ago I found CrossFit. A year ago all I knew was spinning, pilates, yoga, and the occassional “weight training” class. I was intimidated when I fist stepped in…. I saw all the kettlebells, boxes, barbells and rings and thought “there is NO way I can do this stuff”. Aside from that initial feeling though, I also felt really excited because this was something I had never seen or tried before. The atmosphere was welcoming, there were women lifting heavy weight and they didn’t look like dudes, and actually, they made it look easy. I loved the challenge!

After that first workout I committed to 3 months and I haven’t stopped since. In fact, I completely fell in love with CrossFit. I wanted to learn all I could about how to lift, how to do pull ups, how to use the rings and how to become a Coach. A year later, here I am. The experience I’ve had this past year has been amazing. I have met so many cool people with so much knowledge that have helped me to become the Coach I am today… and I don’t plan to stop growing any time soon. The more I learn the more I become inspired to work with people and introduce them to this program that has changed my life. I feel better physically and mentally, I look better, perform better, and I care more about what I eat and how I treat my body… something I was never taught from any fitness facility before joining this community.

So I read the CrossFit Central website a lot because I love the programs they have for women. I found some quotes on there recently that I really liked:

“The CrossFit Women classes buzz with energy, commradary, and achievement. It seems that the reoccurring experience is empowerment. CrossFit empowers women, not only in fitness, but in everyday life. When you achieve something that was deemed too intense for women or something you thought you weren’t capable of – you can conquer the world. You can overcome your battles, fears, and mental barriers outside of the gym.”

“It may sound extreme, but there’s an undeniable connection between our physical health and our mental health, and I’m the happiest I’ve been in years. It’s not about losing weight, but becoming confident and watching myself make progress every month, knowing that I can push myself hard and be stronger because of it.”

“There are no mirrors, we all know that we look like hell, because we’ve just been through hell (and survived). I know that with this group of ladies, it’s the one place where I’m expected to be powerful instead of pretty.”

How do you all feel about your experience with CrossFit? How has it changed you and how do you feel it’s different (or the same) from other programs you have tried in the past? Lemme know!

I have some good recipes coming soon so stay tuned!!

Lessons I learned from the Box

 - me being “teachable” at the Beastskills seminar

I was reading the CrossFit Journal today and came across an article that talked about learning form and technique in CrossFit. Lots of people come into this from an athletic background… I personally was NOT one of those people. Sure I spent some time at the gym in pilates and yoga classes, used some machines here and there, but I never really knew too much about body mechanics. So for those of us who are not used to working with weights and our bodies, learning olympic lifts and gymnastics can be really frustrating.

When I first heard about the 10 physical skills of fitness, I never really took into account just how important it is to make sure my technique was on point. In the beginning you usually work with ligther weight, so getting that bar over you head tends to be easy (in the big picture). But let me tell you something, if your technique is not good by the time you get to your heavier weight you sure as hell aren’t gonna do much (without hurting yourself). This challenge of learning the movements in the beginning can be even harder for people who come from athletic backgrounds… why? Because they think they know everything. If you know everything and you are super competitive by nature, that might be a disaster inside of a CrossFit box. So what can you do to avoid disaster? Well… you allow yourself to be humbled, be teachable (mimic what the coaches show you), and open up your mind to new ways of working out. Even though CrossFit takes simple functional movements (things you do in everyday life) and turns them into a workout, doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy. There are ways that we do things here that are very different than anything you have probably learned at your local global gym. Take this tip from a seasoned athlete who writes:

Sometimes it’s easy to give up on new things before giving them a proper chance. People don’t like feeling uncomfortable, out of their element, unsure, afraid, vulnerable or weak. No one likes the feeling you get when you’re standing there and everyone is watching you, waiting, because you can’t seem to grasp what they can so easily. No one likes the feeling you get when what you’re doing goes against everything you’ve ever known, how you’ve been programmed, so much so that you cannot, for the life of you, figure out how to adapt to it, how to change, how to just let it wash over you as you go with it.”

My suggestion is this: Give yourself TIME. Focus on your technique, not your points or time or body composition and DEFINITELY not your numbers on the scale… at least not in the beginning. If you are always working on your technique and challenging yourself with how you choose to scale your workouts, everything else will follow. The lifts will get easier to accomplish, you will start to speed up, and your body will start to change. This is one of the things that luckily, I caught on to quickly. You have to trust your coaches. You have to ask questions. Most timportantly, you have to be patient with yourself and allow yourself to be teachable.

All we have to do is hold on. The rest will come naturally, if not at first, then soon enough. It’s not that it’s hard, per se. It’s just new.”

Rx Shopping List

Sometimes I forget how long it took for me to switch from the food I used to eat to what I eat now. PROTEIN: Cage free chicken or publix greenwise (do not get purdue or tyson!), Cage free eggs, Fish/shrimp/ scallops, Lean ground beef (90/10), Ground Buffalo, Turkey breast/ground/cutlets (organic, look for hormone/antibiotic free on all of these). You can also get the rotisseire chicken or boar’s head from the deli but stay away from maple or any other sugary flavor (lemon pepper is good!)

BREAD: not preferred, but if you HAVE to get French Meadow 100% Rye w/ sunflower seeds (or any other Gluten free/Wheat free brand). Usually in the frozen section

SNACKS: (minimize eating this stuff though cause it’s still not the best healthy food) Terra chips “sweets and beets” or “sweets and carrots”, Black raisins, Purely Decadent “coconut milk” ice cream (make sure it says coconut milk and not dairy free), Veggie chips from the produce section, Bakery on Main gluten free granola cereal, Lara Bars (in the protein bar section)

SPICES: Anything you want! Choose sea salt over regular salt and stay away from “all seasonings” that usually have a lot of sodium.

Why not dairy? Well in short, no adult human should need the milk used to wean a calf for anything nutritious. You don’t drink your own mother’s breast milk past the age of a couple years, so why as an adult would you drink some from a cow? Not to mention the sugar and hormones that are given to the cows that are in there… Excess hormones and cell production in your body can cause cancer. Stay away!!! You can get calcium from veggies. (this also goes for soy)

That’s all I can think of for now… This should get you off to a good start!!!

Piggybacking off last week’s post about lifting heavy, here is a great post from CrossFit Invictus about what it feels like to lift heavy weight. They give you some great pointers that might help you to get more comfortable…

The Importance of Girls Going Heavy
by CrossFit Invictus

Why I think it is important to go heavy:

Going heavy builds confidence and is very rewarding for women. There is something extraordinarily empowering about being able to perform a body weight overhead lift or twice your body weight deadlift. It reassures you that when you are out in daily life you can hold your own – lug several bags of groceries into the house, then balance them on one knee while you open the door; squat down and scoop up your kids one in each hand or change the water jug at the office.

It helps build muscle and increase bone density. Muscle burns more calories than fat. The higher your lean body mass is the more efficient your body is in burning calories. As women get older their bodies produce less estrogen, which helps to keep bones strong. The strain that is placed on your bones during weight bearing exercise promotes bone strengthening and can help fight against osteoporosis.

What it feels like to go heavy:

You will have to dump the weight at some point in time. If you are successful in all of your lifts you are not pushing hard enough. Some women are afraid to test their limits, because they think they won’t make the lift. That should never be a concern. If you can’t make it – you dump it. But you will never know if you don’t try.

You might feel a little dizzy or light headed. If you get dizzy or light headed it is to be expected and you may be able to lessen the effects if you focus on your breathing. The dizziness is due to a lack of oxygen and won’t be as much of an issue if you make sure to take a deep breath at the beginning of each lift.

The last rep of a set should be questionable. When you are truly going heavy, it is work. It should not be performed with the same ease as the weight you use in a met-con WOD. You should have to fight. If you are doing 5×5 it should be a gamble whether or not you make that last repetition. If not, add some weight.

I hope the longer you are here the more comfortable you will get with lifting heavier weight. It does take a bit of getting used to, but you will find that the more you practice your technique on the different lifts, the more comfortable you will feel. Take some time to work with a coach if you are feeling uneasy, the payoff will be well worth it!

I know for me, it was very empowering to be able to lift more than my own bodyweight. What are some of your experiences with lifting?

“Be not afraid of growing slowly, be only afraid of standing still.” -Chinese Proverb

We have had a burst of new members over at CFK the past few weeks and I am amazed at how great everyone is doing, and how enthusiastic our 101 members have been. I just want to take a minute to say congratulations to all of the new members who have taken this step to improve their lives. Whether you have been athletic your whole life or this is something new for you, you are making a huge change that will only improve the direction you are going. It’s always hard to break out of your comfort zone, but the rewards you will see make it all worth it in the end. This community has so much more to offer than just a place to work out… keep it up, stick around, get to know the people at the box, and you will see!

BE Beautiful!

GREAT article from Againfaster.com:

“If I were feeling a little more lawless, I’d gather all the copies of Cosmo and Seventeen, douse them in kerosene, and strike a match.  I’d throw in reams of print ads from Calvin Klein and watch with delight as Kate Moss’ stick-thin image was reduced to carbon.  I’d add copies of Shape and Runner’s World until the flames reached toward the heavens, and then I’d crank call the editorial desk at Muscle and Fitness until they stopped publishing pictures of women on steroids.

I’d get the master tapes of America’s Next Top Model and dub over them with “Nasty Girls”, broadcasting the results on every television station in America.  I’d skywrite “CrossFit.com” across the Boston skyline, and gently admonish the hoards of long distance runners trotting along the Charles River—with a bullhorn.

I’d take every woman with mass media-induced ideals of beauty, and I’d show them what it really means to be beautiful.

Beautiful women are strong and powerful.  They are athletes, capable of every feat under the sun.  They have muscles, borne of hard work and sweat.  They gauge their self-worth through accomplishments, not by the numbers on the bathroom scale.  They understand that muscle weighs more than fat, and they love the fact that designer jeans don’t fit over their well-developed quads.

They know that high repetitions using light weights is a path to mediocrity, and “toning” is a complete and utter myth.  They refuse to succumb to the marketers that prey on insecurity, leaving the pre-packaged diet dinners and fat-burning pills on the shelf to pass their expiration date.

Beautiful women train with intensity.  The derive self-image from the quality of their work and their ability to excel.  They don’t wear makeup to the gym, and they wouldn’t be caught dead with a vinyl pink dumbbell.  They move iron, they do pull-ups, they jump, sprint, punch, and kick, and they use the elliptical machine—as a place to hang their jump rope.

They spend their weekends in sport, climbing walls, winning races, and running rivers.  They laugh as they sprint circles around the unschooled, turning the image-obsessed into benchwarmers.  Beautiful women don’t care if they’re soaked in sweat and covered in dirt, if their nails are chipped or their hair out of place.  They care only about quality of life.

Beautiful women are happy, healthy, and strong, and they’re right there beside me, tossing conventional beauty on the ever-growing flames of what used to be.

Be beautiful.”

I will not be updating this weekend cause I’m going to volunteer at the CrossFit Games sectionals. I’m pretty excited for the event and spending time with some new friends.

You know, I read something the other day  ”Show me your friends and I’ll tell you who you are”.  It’s an old saying and I’ve heard it before, but it really resonated this time. The people you meet in this community are really just awesome, good people. They have the common goal of improving their lives, they are supportive, and they help one another to discover strengths they never knew they had. Who else do you know that wakes up super early on a weekend to go flip tires around or run marathons, or even shows up every day just to watch and cheer you on, even if it’s their off day? Nobody I’ve met before, that’s for sure! So what does that make you? Pretty awesome for being a part of it all.

3 Mar

Last night I was at the box watching everyone push through a real tough WOD and I felt so happy that I found a place where I can see so many people changing their lives. When I got home, I wrote a little facebook comment about how we have some of the most amazing members with some real heart and determination. So today while surfing some blogs, I came across a post that just said it all so perfectly. Sometimes you read something and it just gives you chills.. this post from CrossFit Buffalo did that for me:

Why I CrossFit

“I don’t want to start.”  I had never heard those words come out of Hubie’s mouth before.  At least not with any hint of sincerity.  The WOD was no harder than many others we had done.  No different.  Except that it would be Hubie’s last one at Crossfit Buffalo.

The effect spilled over.  I knew what the WOD was but until he looked at me and said that it did not hit home.

It hit home that its not just a workout or a program.  Not just a gym. It never was.  And its not a cult or some secret society or any of the other monikers people have come up with.

Over a year ago Hubie came in to stay for “A month or so…Just to learn some form and technique.”  A few months later he came in and said “How do you leave this?”

What is “this”?

To me this is Hubie going from a “month or so” to being part of the backbone of this gym.  Coaching, performing, and inspiring without rhyme or reason save an inherent desire and passion to do so.  To me this is Colin going through hell week  to  become a SEAL when a year ago he sat at a desk hating his life.  Its a snickers bar and a banana.  It’s Barb at 63 yrs young grinding out power cleans next to college kids who are willing themselves to work as hard as she is.  And Barb deadlifting over 200lbs when 15 lbs used to be daunting to her.  It’s friends whom you have known for a short time who will drive forty miles through one of the worst winter storms in years to get to your fathers funeral when people who live right around the corner would not.  It’s Darryl finding a place in this world that will let him use all of his abilities to their fullest.  It’s Amber saying “I never knew I could do that”.  It’s Ed not saying a word through immense knee pain everyday.  It’s Steve getting 38 pull-ups with a bad arm. It’s where standards are set.

It’s where you feel sorry for the person who has never felt the sting of salty sweat running over chalk covered hands into shins ripped open by a rusty bar.  It’s where you have every reason to quit but you don’t because nobody else is.

This is why I Crossfit.

Teenage Girls and Body Image: Beauty in Strength

I was thinking yesterday about how CrossFit has transformed my body, and how for so long I wanted to get my body to where it is now and had no idea how to do that. It’s pretty scary how so many women resort to unhealthy ways of getting thin. Think of what a difference we could make if we started to teach our kids at a young age about fitness and nutrition! Especially for young girls, the messages they get from the media about what equals pretty or beautiful are really distorted. For one, most of the role models today are extremely thin and promote all kinds of quick fix fad diets and sorry excuses for exercise, confusing young girls about what it means to be healthy. The CrossFit Journal recently published a photo spread titled “Beauty in Strength”, which showcased the athletic, healthy, and beautiful women of the CrossFit Games. I think this is a great message to send to women all over: that there is no quick fix to being healthy, that being physically active is a good thing, and that “skinny” doesn’t always equal healthy either.

Psychology Today is a website I read a lot that talks about all kinds of topics relating to mental and physical wellness. In this article, the author talks about the mixed messages she received as a young girl about being thin, and the dangerous ways she resorted to being thin, saying “ I would do anything to be thin because thin meant I was loveable”.

She goes on to talk about her view of the female athletes at her high school:

“I remember seeing emaciated women in the college cafeteria who felt they were bad if they ate a few crumbs. But, these were not the female athletes. The female athletes were confident, strong, and they had teammates. And..it was OK to be strong. Women can be strong and feminine. These are not mutually exclusive. In my opinion, one of the best byproducts of collegiate women’s sports has been increased camaraderie. The women had teammates. They had women friends to eat dinner with, to study with, and to give them emotional support.”

So what I took away from this article was this: We can protect the young women we know by teaching them about fitness and nutrition at a young age, and by getting them involved in positive activities like sports and eating right. We can promote these things in a fun way and let our girls know that being athletic brings lots of good things, like bonds with teammates,  increased self-esteem, and more energy and happiness overall. CrossFit is a sport, and it is making its way into lots of high schools, middle schools, and even into pre-schools! Starting very soon, we will be running our CrossFit Pre-school, Kids, and Teens program, and we even offer special rates for current high school athletes. If you know someone who could benefit from these programs (and who couldn’t, really?!), bring them in. We can help out a lot of young people by teaching them about athleticism and fitness as a lifestyle.

Women and Strength Training

Women’s bodies respond differently than mens when it comes to strength training. One of the most common concerns for women when first beginning CrossFit is the possibility of “getting big” lifting all that heavy weight; but experts say otherwise:

“Muscles cannot get “longer” without some rather radical orthopedic surgery. Muscles don’t get leaner—you do. There is no such thing as “firming and toning.” There is only stronger and weaker.

The vast majority of women cannot get large, masculine muscles from barbell training. There is such a profound difference in male and female testosterone levels that the strength differences between men and women are almost entirely accounted for by hormone level.”

So what we CAN expect to get out of CrossFit is what we are told by our coaches when you first sign up: “You WILL get in the best shape of your life”. It takes some hard work though. We know the secret to fitness and health, and we also know all the hard work is well worth it…

“As CrossFit grows and it becomes harder to ignore the results of honest work done at high intensities, the media are taking notice. You pretty much get out of an effort what you put into it. Effective exercise is more like training for athletics and less like lying around on the floor.”

-Quotes taken from the CrossFit Journal

02.05.10 FRIDAY!

4 Feb

I wanted to highlight some of the beautiful women at our box and share with everyone their amazing growth and strength. For those of you who do not know, we are a new box… only 5 months old. Although the head coaches have been training CrossFit for a while, the majority of the athletes started when our place opened. The last few months we have started to highlight some of the obstacles these people have overcome in the short time they have been here, and let me tell you they are amazing!

This month, Cecilia was chosen as our Athlete of the Month. Here are some things she had to say about her experience:

Technically I didn’t join CrossFit Kingdom, my husband signed us both up without even asking if I wanted to. CrossFit Kingdom is conveniently located about 4 miles from my house and 6 from work. Victor told me we were going to start working out together in this really cool program that was super hard but fun at the same time, and since I enjoy doing things together and also wanted to support him, I agreed. I had no idea what he was getting me in to!

The first day we arrived early and saw the 10 a.m. class, I wanted to turn around and leave! Those people were in awesome shape doing these crazy exercises. I was sweating and tired just looking at them. We did the 101, and the next day muscles I didn’t know I had were sore. Everyday after class I swore I didn’t want to go back, but every morning I couldn’t wait for the class to start. I was part of the CrossFit cult. Obsessed with the challenge and addicted to the euphoria of finishing every WOD. I never thought it was going to make such an impact in my life.

The coaches are ALL very supportive and have had the patience to teach me the techniques and forms I thought I would never do. THEY BELIEVED IN ME WHEN I DIDN’T and for that I am very grateful. The members are all very nice people and we help each other get better. There is no competition.

I have always been an active person, but at 55 yrs. old and with two kids to finish raising I feel stronger and healthier to be able to be there for them. THANK YOU CROSSFIT KINGDOM, you guys are doing a great job not only with me, but with all the members I have met and keep meeting. GO CROSSFIT KINGDOM!

Read: “Why Women Should Lift Weights”

10 reasons why weightlifting is great for women. I used to believe that lifting weight meant getting big and bulky, but experience and lots of studies say otherwise. After researching all of the benefits associated with a well-rounded fitness routine (and this always includes weight lifting), I can’t find any reason NOT to incorporate this into your exercise.
